EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE OF THE ORGANIZATION IN THE PROJECT’S SUBJECT AREA Digital historiography has been producing huge amounts of digital material available. Although this information is available at national level, historians and archivists needs extra support to use efficiently this information and study this in order to mine accurate results.

Economical and financial historical documents are very popular for the Greeks due to its present economic state. The Department of Applied Informatics in Management and Economy, where Spiros Sirmakessis acts as a Head of Department, offers to students knowledge and skills necessary to develop and implement Information Technology applications in the fields of Management and Finance. Consequently, a profound knowledge of both Information Technology and the subjects of Management, Business Administration and Economics is required and provided.

In the field of digitization, the lab has already implemented a project in the field of digitizing documents and photos and make them available on the web.
REASONS OF INVOLVEMENT IN THE PROJECT The Hellenic Government has initiated several political priorities in the area and our organisation is following some of them. The first Priority Axes of the Operational Program Information Society -Education and Culture is to adapt the educational system to the needs of the digital age and to achieve increased use of new technologies in education, including the networking of schools, universities and the academic community (including administrative services); training teachers and pupils; and developing digital educational content. In addition, ICTs will be used to manage, document and promote Greek culture and civilisation. In accordance with the recommendations of the eEurope 2002 and eEurope 2005 action plans, a cohesive action plan becomes effective, ensuring that all schools have access to the Internet and to multimedia tools. Young people living in the less prosperous parts of the country are at the least ensured access to the IS via public connection points. By the end of the Operational Programme, it is intended that all teachers will be trained in the use of the Internet and multimedia tools, and all graduates of compulsory education will be “computer-literate”.
CONTACT PERSON’S EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE Spiros Sirmakessis is a technical consultant of the Hellenical Statistical Services, that has an historical repository of economic figures from the early years of the Greek Economy. Moreover, he is been working in European Projects since 1997 and he has coordinated several EU and National funded projects.

His involvement as a consultant expert in the digitisation of national archives of the region of Aitoloakarnania will help in the mining of the historical documents needed for the project.
