EXERCISE

What does the dialectical method described by Marx mean?

  • Marx believed that any study of reality must be related to the contradictions within society and, indeed, he sees contradiction as the motor of historical change.
  • The world is dominated by cause-and-effects relationships
  • The process of thinking (called ‘the idea’) is the demiurgos (creator) of the real world, and the real world is only the external, phenomenal form of 'the Idea.
  • Dialectics is the art of arriving at the truth by disclosing the contradictions in the argument of an opponent and overcoming these contradictions
